Sacre Coeur basilica in Paris, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is a famous landmark at the top of Montmartre, from which it dominates the city.
The Sacre Coeur started construction in 1870 after the Franco Prussian War, but was not completed before 1914 and not dedicated before 1919, after the First World War. It is built in the Romano-Byzantine style and contains the largest mosaics in the world. The nearby bell tower contains the `Savoyarde' bell.
From the earliest days , Montmartre has been a place of worship: the Druids, the Gauls, the romains temples dedicated to the gods Mars et Mercury; St Peter's church rebuilt near the Royal Abbey of Montmartre on the XII century by King Louis the VI and his wife Adelaide of Savoy; and finally the Sacred Heart erected at the end of the XIX century.
